School Readiness Assessments

Helping Your Child Start with Confidence

At Deutsche Schule Melbourne, we believe every child deserves the best possible start to their school journey. Children must turn five by 31 December in the year before starting school. If your child is born between 1 January and the last day of February, an exemption may be granted based on their readiness. Our School Readiness Assessment helps us understand your child’s development and whether they are ready to thrive in our bilingual, bicurricular environment.

Such an assessment may also be arranged for children with limited preschool experience, a multilingual background, or unique learning needs.

Our Commitment to Readiness

We take a child-centred approach, aiming to:

  • Support a smooth transition from kindergarten to school.
  • Understand your child’s readiness across languages and learning areas.
  • Share helpful insights with families along the way.

Children born after the last day of February will require a psychologist’s recommendation to participate in the school readiness process. Attendance in four-year-old Kindergarten and participation in the full assessment process are essential. The final enrolment decision is made by the Principal in the best interest of the child.

What the Assessment Involves

Our process combines input from multiple perspectives:

  • Parent Questionnaire – Your view on your child’s interests and development.
  • Educator Questionnaire – Feedback from your child’s early learning setting.
  • Individual Session – A relaxed, play-based assessment in both English and German, led by our Foundation teachers. We gently observe how your child communicates, interacts, and engages independently.
