Starting School in Victoria: Is Your Child Ready for Foundation?

In Victoria, children can start school if they turn 5 years old by 30 April, the standard cut-off used by most schools. While this determines eligibility, being age-eligible does not always mean a child is ready for school — especially in a bilingual learning environment. At DSM, we go beyond age to ensure every child starts confidently, capable, and secure.

Why Readiness Matters in a Bilingual School

Learning in two languages develops:

  • Flexibility in thinking and problem-solving
  • Strong communication and independence
  • Confidence to try new experiences

It also requires children to:

  • Process more information
  • Stay engaged even when they don’t fully understand instructions
  • Build confidence through trial and error

At DSM, we support this with structured routines, visual cues, and a nurturing environment, helping children thrive from day one.

Key School Readiness Indicators

Every child develops differently, but common signs of school readiness include:

Feeling Independent

  • Manages basic self-care: toileting, dressing, and opening lunch items
  • Organises belongings independently

Connecting with Others

  • Separates from parents or carers confidently
  • Plays and interacts positively with peers
  • Takes turns and copes with small frustrations

Engaging in Learning

  • Listens and follows 2–3 step instructions
  • Shows curiosity and interest in new activities and learning new words
  • Can focus on a task for a short period

Communicating Needs

  • Expresses thoughts, needs, and emotions
  • Responds appropriately to simple questions and conversations

No child will tick every box — and that’s normal. Our approach looks at the overall picture to ensure a confident start.

How DSM Supports a Thoughtful Start

Most schools in Victoria follow the 30 April cut-off.

At DSM, we take a personalised approach:

  • Children usually start if they are 5 years old by 1 January.
  • Children born between January and April — eligible under the standard cut-off — are required to complete our Readiness Assessment Programme before their place can be confirmed, ensuring they are truly ready to thrive in a bilingual school environment.

DSM Readiness Assessment Program

Our supportive process gives families and teachers clear guidance:

  1. Parent Insights – You share what you know best about your child
  2. Educator Feedback – Input from your child’s early learning centre or kindergarten
  3. Play-Based Assessment – A relaxed session, observing communication, resiliency, interaction, and independence.
Every child should start school when they are ready. This assessment helps us to determine whether that time is now, and whether our programme is the right fit. We look at academic readiness and social-emotional development to decide whether we can offer your child a place.

Give Your Child a Confident Start
