Late-Entry Accelerated Pathway

A specialised program for students joining Deutsche Schule Melbourne (DSM) in Years 2 to 5, with no prior German language skills.

DSM offers selected students without prior German language knowledge the opportunity to join our school in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5. Students will receive approximately two years of individualised support through staff who specialise in differentiation to prepare them for a smooth transition into the mainstream program.

Students received an individual combination of 3 types of lessons. As their language skills develop, children spend more time in our regular immersion program.

How our Accelerated Pathway works

We’ve designed the program to help students acquire their new language in the most effective way possible.

When they begin, students will attend three distinct types of lessons:

  • Intense German language classes
  • Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) lessons
  • Classes with their respective main cohort

The program consists of three distinct types of lessons

Intense German language classes

Students learn the German language quickly and in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) lessons

This is a second-language learning pedagogy where content from other subject areas such as Maths and Integrated Studies is taught primary in the target language which in our case is German. Students learn the German language in general as well as the subject-specific vocabulary they need to study subjects such as Maths and Integrated Studies in German once they are fully integrated into their respective cohort.

Classes with their respective cohort

Students attend classes with their relevant cohort in English and Germany. The subjects English, Maths, andIntegrated Studies are taught in English while Sport, Art and Music are taught in German.
