Principal

Deutsche Schule Melbourne is looking for an experienced Principal to join our independent bilingual primary school in Fitzroy North, Victoria as of April 2022 or by appointment.

You will be an energetic, contemporary and aspirational leader, and a positive role model for staff with the ability to coach and lead individuals and groups towards successful teaching and learning outcomes. Together with the Deputy Principal and the Head of Curriculum and Assessment you will lead innovation and change in the School’s ongoing quest to improve learning outcomes for students.

Your Role:

  • Strategic and operational management of an independent bilingual primary school
  • Management and strategic roadmap development to continuously progress the vision for DSM's future Lead and implement the establishment of the Secondary School program based on the International Baccalaureate in German and English (GIB).
  • Overall responsibility for the implementation and continuous development of various teaching methods and programs
  • Establish an inclusive and positive school culture
  • Selection, management and development of a team of currently around 20 teachers
  • Develop and maintain healthy relationships with stakeholders (students, staff, parents, board) including effective communication channels
  • Close cooperation with the school board
  • Crisis Management
  • Representation of the school in the local and international community
  • Approximately 8-10 hours teaching per week

Your Profile:

  • Successful completion of tertiary studies with a focus on teaching
  • German language skills on a native speaker level (C2 compulsory)
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in a similar leadership position Outstanding interpersonal skills and intercultural understanding Experience with differentiated, interdisciplinary teaching as well as multilingual school concepts
  • Ideally you are experienced in building essential parts of a growing school or introducing the IB
  • The capacity to strategically initiate and scale relevant processes and systems
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, organization and conflict resolution skills
  • A combination of resilience and a supportive and collaborative management and leadership style

The German School Melbourne opened in 2008 and offers bilingual primary school education from Foundation Year to year 6 with classes taught in both English and German. The school currently counts 140 students and has an excellent team of 20 teachers. Working at our school means working at a bilingual school with an international atmosphere, a recognised school concept and a committed school community. Our aim for the future is to continue the strong growth and extend our educational offer to a secondary school program based on the International Baccalaureate in German and English (GIB).
