Deputy Principal - Teaching and Learning

Deutsche Schule Melbourne is currently looking for an experienced Deputy Principal to join our independent bilingual primary school in Fitzroy North, Victoria.

You will be an energetic, contemporary and aspirational leader, and a positive role model for staff with the ability to coach and lead individuals and groups towards successful teaching and learning outcomes. Together with the Deputy Principal – School Development you will assist the Principal in leading innovation and change in the School’s quest to ongoing school improvement.


Your role:

  • Pro-actively lead, motivate and empower teaching staff in their professional growth
  • Develop, research, implement and manage programs and policies to improve the knowledge and experience of staff and address their professional learning needs
  • Supervise and lead the development and delivery of teaching and learning programs using the school’s unique curricula, assessment and reporting guidelines Model excellent practice and evaluate school assessment policies to support colleagues meet assessment requirements and provide a range of effective and appropriate feedback strategies
  • Drive opportunities for school wide initiatives to bring aspects of the school’s vision and mission to life
  • Lead and develop a strong, inclusive and positive culture where each person is valued, respected and empowered
  • Manage student wellbeing and maintain supportive and safe learning environments
  • Develop and maintain healthy relationships with stakeholders (students, staff, parents, board) including effective communication channels
 

Your profile: 

After highly successful completion of tertiary studies with a focus on primary school teaching, you have gained several years of experience in a similar leadership position (minimum requirement is Head of Department). You are interested in innovative and open learning methods, and you have the passion to drive their implementation and educate and support teaching staff in their professional development.


Ideally, you have lived in different cultural environments and are familiar with teaching children from varied language backgrounds. Preferably, you have German language skills. You are passionate about each student’s learning, and you easily build a trustful relationship with your students. Your teaching approach effectively caters for a wide variety of students' individual learning needs and language backgrounds.

Profile of ideal candidate:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a leadership position (minimum requirement is Head of Department)
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a supportive and collaborative management and leadership style
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience with curriculum development and accountability mechanisms 
  • Strong emotional intelligence to inspire and motivate a dynamic team of international teachers
  • The capacity to strategically initiate relevant processes to establish processes and lead change in a growing school according to the school’s vision and mission
  • German language skills or willingness to learn them 


Deutsche Schule Melbourne delivers German-English bilingual education for families, who value the benefits it offers. The vision for children at DSM is to grow up learning two languages at the same time, preparing them to become involved citizens of the world. Established 12 years ago, DSM offers bilingual primary school education from Foundation Year to grade 6 with classes taught both in English and German. The school counts 138 students and has a fantastic team of 18 teachers and is continuously growing.
