Enrolling your child in a bilingual school
Choosing a bilingual school for your child’s education is the first step on a very rewarding journey. Giving your child the opportunity to grow up in a bilingual and multicultural environment prepares your child to become a confident global citizen, to appreciate people from diverse cultural backgrounds, and is one of the most precious gifts you can give your child.
Deutsche Schule Melbourne welcomes applications for enrolment from students with a background in English, German, or any other language at primary school level. Students without a background in German are eligible to apply for enrolment in the Preparatory Year. Language testing may be required for students entering the school at later year levels to ensure that they are fully able to participate in the schools programs.
The process involves the submission of the enrolment documents, including the latest school report and an interview with the Head Teacher which includes both parents/guardians and the student. The purpose of the meeting is to explore whether the school and its programme are able to meet the family's needs and expectations and vice versa.
Deutsche Schule Melbourne schedules a number of Open Days each year. The Open Days provide an excellent opportunity for families to get to know the school, the bilingual environment and curriculum. Students and parents can experience first hand what it feels like being at a bilingual school, meet the teachers and talk with other parents about their experiences at the school whilst enjoying some morning tea. There are always plenty of children, so bring your child along and let them get a feel for the school, too!
In 2013 Open Days are scheduled for:
|Open Day 1:
||16 March 2013,
||10am - 12pm
|Open Day 2:

Timing of Application
As with most independent schools, places at Deutsche Schule Melbourne are limited and an application does not guarantee placement for the child. The school encourages interested families to apply for enrolment as early as possible.
Deutsche Schule Melbourne has one enrolment process that applies to both local and international students. Please refer to our Enrolment Policy, Conditions of Enrolment and Fee Schedule 2013 for more details.
In keeping with the requirements of Victorian Schools, we require the following information to process an application for enrolment:
a) Application for Enrolment form and payment of a $100 Application Fee.
b) Copy of Birth Certificate
c) Copy of passport(s)
d) Copy of Australian visa, if citizen of a country other than Australia
e) Copy of students latest school/kindergarten report
f) Copy of Immunisation Record

Please make sure that your application includes all requested documents. Unfortunately, the school can not process incomplete applications. Please note, that the Application Fee is used to recover the administrative costs associated with the application and is non-refundable.
Offer of Place and Confirmation of Place
Formal offers will be made around 18 months prior to entry. Later enrolments are generally possible, if places are available. Once an offer has been made, the offer must be accepted within 21 days to guarantee placement.
To accept an offer of enrolment at DSM payment of a deposit will be required. This deposit consists of a non-refundable Enrolment Fee of $1,200 and a Bond of $2,000. The Bond only needs to be paid once per family. Once the last family member has left the school the bond will be refunded interest-free, subject to all other amounts due to DSM having been paid..
Upon receipt of the Enrolment Fee and Bond, written confirmation of enrolment is provided.
A small number of Scholarships are available. These are awarded on a needs basis. The scholarships provide a reduction in tuition fees, and are awarded as available funds permit at the discretion of the scholarship committee. Scholarships are generally awarded for one year, but may be re-applied for and re-awarded in the subsequent year, provided the applicant’s circumstances remain unchanged.
Applications for Scholarships need to be submitted to the School prior to 30. September in the year prior to the student commencing school. A student does not need to be enrolled at the school to apply for a scholarship. The applicant is expected to schedule an interview with the Head Teacher and Business Manager to discuss the individual student’s circumstances prior to submitting an application. Applicants are informed in writing concerning the outcome of their application by mid October. Please contact our Business Manager Barbara Walsh for further details on 03 9489 9364.
