Deutsche Schule Melbourne - A German English Bilingual school is located in the heart of North Fitzroy.

The vision for children at DSM is to grow up learning two languages at the same time, preparing the children to become involved citizens of an increasingly global world.

The school caters for families of German and/or English language background. We offer your children the opportunity to learn a second language as a “mother tongue”.

Currently, DSM offers bilingual primary school education with classes taught both in English and German. It is expected that the school will grow and also offer secondary school education in the future.

In the early primary school years 80-90% of classes are taught in German. Both languages are taught as mother tongues. The highly qualified teachers have obtained their teaching degrees in the country of their mother tongue (Germany or Australia) and have obtained teaching experiences. All teachers are fully registered to teach in Victoria. The proportion of classes taught in English gradually increases so that by Year 6, classes are taught 50% in English and 50% in German. “Early bilingual immersion” programs have been successfully taught in place in Canada for many years. Our school is suitable for all children who speak German and/or English at home.

The school is currently attended by students from grade Prep till grade In the next two years grade 5 and 6 will be added.

DSM’s curriculum is designed to fulfill both Victorian and German Government requirements. The school participates in all the tests provided by the Australian government (i.e. NAPLAN) and fulfills all quality requirements imposed on schools in Victoria.

It is planned that students will graduate with the International Baccalaureate from High School. Thus students will be well prepared to continue tertiary education in Victoria, interstate or internationally.
